Integrated MSc – PhD

Integrated MSc-PhD Programme at Ashoka University is designed to nurture and mentor highly motivated students in building their researcher career form the earlier stages. The programme will admit students with a Bachelor’s Degree and offer them an opportunity to experience a blend of coursework and research projects, while awarding them both Masters and PhD Degree.

Research Areas

  • Core CS research areas
  • Application of data science and machine learning in health analytics, pollution studies, ecology, agriculture, climate change and sustainability
  • Interdisciplinary research areas with Departments such as Biology, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Policy Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science, etc.

Eligibility

A 3-year BSc in Computer Science (or equivalent) or a 3-year BSc in Economics/Electronics/Physics/Mathematics/Statistics with 55% marks, or the GPA equivalent. You will have the opportunity to leverage your background in subjects such as Biology, Economics, Electronics, Mathematics, Physics etc.

Duration

  • The expected duration of the combined program is 6 years.
  • At the end of the program, a student who successfully completes the program will be awarded an MSc by Research and a PhD in Computer Science.

Milestones

Requirements

Successful completion of the milestone requirements leads to:

By the end of Year 2

1. 84 credits of CS courses

2. Out of these, 24 credits are to be done as project courses / independent research studies (3x 8-credits each, with three different CS faculty)

3. Rest 60 credits need to be completed as regular CS courses

1. Promotion to JRF

2. Selection of Ph.D. Supervisor

By the end of Year 3

1. Research credits (36)

 

2. MSc dissertation (exit option) or completion of Ph.D. Quals + Proposal defense

1. Promotion to SRF

OR

 

2. Permission to exit the program with the MSc by Research degree

Beginning of Year 4 – End of Year 6

1. Align with the regular Ph.D. program

1. Award of MSc + Ph.D. degree in CS

Fees and Stipend

Recall that the Integrated PhD program will have a course work and training requirement in the Master’s part, the typical duration for which will be two years. After successful completion of the Master’s part of the program, all students will receive support of 35K as graduate assistantship + 7k (for accommodation).

We will endeavour to also provide financial support to selected candidates during the Master’s part, but this will be on a case-by-case basis subject to administrative approval.

Fees 12.5K per semester for the duration of the entire programme.

After clicking on the above link, please click on “New Registration”, and then you will be requested to select the programme that you are interested in pursuing at Ashoka from a drop-down box. Please select “Integrated MSc + PhD programme in Computer Science”. Then you can continue and complete the registration process.

Please ensure that the email address, which you provide during the registration process, is indeed a valid email address because all communications regarding the written test and the interview will be sent to this email address.   

Application Instructions

The admissions process comprises of a Written Test and an Interview.

Written Test

The written test may consist of subjective, open-ended and multiple-choice questions. Basic knowledge of college mathematics will be required. Open-ended questions may also be asked to determine the thought-process and logical thinking of the candidates. This time, the written test will be done in online mode.

Interview

All the students, who qualify in the written test, will be called for an oral interview. A typical interview will be conducted by the faculty members of the Computer Science department. The objective of the interview is to assess the student’s understanding of the proposed area of research (if any), communication skills and commitment to pursue Ph.D.

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on merit taking a combination of factors into consideration. These factors include (but are not limited to) the performance of the candidate in the written test and interview, academic record and achievements such as scholarships, awards in competitions, paper publications, patents and internship(s) and work experience in a prestigious organization.
